Cooperative Reflection and Synchronization Design for Distributed Multiple-RIS Communications

To reap the promised gain achieved by distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-enhanced communications in a wireless network, timing synchronization among these metasurfaces is an essential prerequisite practice. This paper proposes unified framework for joint estimation of unknown offsets and RIS channel parameters, as well design cooperative reflection algorithm multiple-RIS communication. Considering that usually passive device with limited capability signal processing, individual offset gains each hop links cannot be directly estimated. make tractable, we propose to estimate cascaded channels jointly deriving maximum likelihood estimator. Furthermore, theoretically characterize Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) evaluate accuracy this By using proposed estimator derived CRLBs, efficient resynchronization devised at RISs destination compensate multiple offsets. Based on majorization-minimization framework, admits semi-closed closed form solutions matrices equalizer, respectively. Simulation results verify our theoretical analysis matches numerical tests validate effectiveness algorithm.
